Regional Management Accountant

MSALABS is a global provider of geochemical laboratory services for the exploration and mining industries. We provide analytical services suitable from greenfields exploration through to mine closure, including sample preparation, a complete range of analytical techniques and construction and management of complete on-site laboratories. We also have a global agreement to deploy  PhotonAssay technology across our laboratory network, the revolutionary new technology for gold analysis delivering multiple advantages over the traditional fire assay process.

MSALABS is looking to hire a Regional Management for its West African operations, reporting to the Financial Controller.

 Job Summary

The Regional Management Accountant will be responsible for:

    • Provide leadership and direction for the finance and administration functions across MSALABS operations in West Africa
    • Provide coverage and support as applicable to West Africa Team, including training and development of local teams
    • Supervise the Financial Accounting and Management Accounting function across MSALABS operations in West Africa
    • Ensure that each finance department is run effectively, efficiently, professionally and is compliant with all relevant taxation, corporate governance legislation and Company policy
    • Assist with the external audit processes across all countries in the region
    • Assist in the development of the finance and administration strategy and implementation in line with corporate strategy

Job functions and responsibilities


  • Promote a culture of safety leadership at all levels of the organisation

  • Act as a mentor for the technical skills exchange in order to develop direct reports to assume positions of increasing responsibility, with special reference to the anticipated requirements of MSALABS
  • Supervision, management and team building of the West Africa team


  • Supervision of all accounting and finance related activities across West Africa
  • Act as a liaison between the West Africa teams and the Corporate team, particularly in relation to end of month, group allocations, management reporting and audit tasks
  • Provide leave coverage for the Accountants and/or Administration as required
  • Review work undertaken by local finance teams and provide feedback/assist with corrections as necessary
  • Prepare balance sheet reconciliations, including WIP, new venture, accruals, intercompany etc.
  • Act as an escalation point for each country in order to resolve any Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Payroll or Treasury operational matters
  • Prepare and review reconciliations of all balance sheet accounts to ensure they are completed to a satisfactory manner each month
  • Ensure compliance with Approvals Authority Policy
  • Prepare monthly cash plan for review, update weekly for analysis and ensure that payments and receipts are properly allocated
  • Filing and reconciliation of country tax returns, ensure that payments are made within the prescribed deadline
  • Prepare end of month balance sheet report for review, including detailed analysis of all items
  • Prepare end of month profit and loss report for review, with detailed analysis of all expenses to ensure correct allocation and all costs have been captured
  • Review the results monthly with the Operating Managers before sending for review to Finance Manager
  • Update cash book daily, post transactions on the system, payments and receipts, and reconcile weekly
  • Prepare and review the petty cash analysis for posting and ensure expenses are correctly allocated
  • Report daily bank balance to Management
  • Prepare payments and send for approval, and ensure that the correct amounts are being paid to the vendors
  • Prepare and process journal entries on the system
  • Record capitalisation, disposals, and transfers of assets, and ensure that the fixed asset clearing account is reconciled
  • Ensure files are kept up to date
  • Where relevant, assist with new country incorporations

Statutory Requirements

  • Ensure ongoing compliance with SYSCOHADA and IFRS accounting and oversee the preparation of SYSCOHADA and IFRS compliant financial statements
  • Supervise the local audit for both SYSCOHADA and IFRS reporting

Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure that all company accounting procedures are adhered to and that they comply with all relevant Government and Statutory Acts and Regulations
  • Report any breaches in compliance, particularly with all statutory requirements and company procedures


  • Prepare budgets and forecast and perform variance analysis of reported costs vs budgeted costs, liaise with the relevant Operational Manager to explain variances

Cost Control

  • Support the Operations Managers and Senior Management in understanding contract results.
  • Supervise ongoing cost reviews, analysis and discussion across the region
  • Interaction with each laboratory in each country on the financial results, including variance analysis and recommendation of improvement activities

Financial Reporting

  • Work directly with the teams in West Africa to provide support in terms of financial accounting, management accounting, audit and all other finance tasks as required
  • Ensure the timely and accurate preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting for all stakeholders
  • Management of weekly revenue reporting, forecasts and reporting to CFO and Financial Controller for cash flow


  • Travel on a regular basis to each laboratory
  • Meet agreed KPI’s and objectives defined on a yearly basis
  • Any other responsibilities and duties that are deemed to be appropriate for this position and assigned by your supervisor/manager
  • Process and settle invoices (Accounts Payable and Receivable) on the ERP system, ensure approvals of all invoices are receiving before processing

Education & Training Requirements

  • Undergraduate qualification in Accounting
  • Master’s degree in Finance or Accounting
  • A professional qualification (or working towards) in the field of Accounting/Internal Auditing would be an advantage
  • Practical courses relating to Finance or Accounting in West Africa would be an advantage

Experience Requirements

  • A minimum of 10 years of professional experience in the field of Accounting/Finance or Auditing
  • A minimum of 8 years of professional experience in the mining or manufacturing industry
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a senior/leadership role
  • Experience working with foreign multi-national enterprises

Equipment Knowledge

  • Excel knowledge (intermediate to advanced level)
  • Strong computer skills, including use of email/Outlook, Word and Powerpoint
  • Knowledge and experience with ERP’s, such as D365, Sage, SAP, Oracle, Pronto or Sun
